Off the coast of Haida Gwaii in Hecate Strait, the proposed 400MW Offshore Wind project will harness some of the world’s strongest and most consistent winds to provide clean renewable energy to generations of British Columbians.
The Project will provide for opportunities along B.C.’s north coast through construction and ongoing maintenance and monitoring employment opportunities, complemented by training and other ancillary benefits resulting from the project.
The Project could include a grid connection to Haida Gwaii from Prince Rupert. This connection would eliminate the dependence on expensive, diesel generation and facilitate opportunity for other renewable energy sources. By providing connectivity to the electricity grid, the connection will also facilitate the development of on-island generation projects such as wind, biomass and run of river.
The Wind turbines would be positioned offshore, southeast of Rose Spit. The Project will be connected to the mainland near Prince Rupert, and to Haida Gwaii, via submarine cables. The area offers the strong and consistent winds and shallow waters needed to accommodate offshore wind turbines.
